There just isn’t much to do right now, even with the steadily increasing level cap and continuing Pre-Seasons. The barebones structure is to be expected at this point, and is one of the few drawbacks I predict might turn off incoming players. But until that’s all fleshed out, we need brand new areas to explore and new missions to tackle. Yeah, there’s Expedition Mode, which is tied to the slowly burgeoning War Effort feature and basically doles out objectives during what amounts to a free-roam option. As it stands, there’s only one map (Tundra) and once you’ve completed all six missions, the only stuff left to do is revisit all that same exact content on higher difficulty levels as you improve your level, perks and weapons. The biggest problem I see with Second Extinction right now (besides the 3-player limit) is its lack of map and mission variety. Plus, with the deep and low-barrier entry userbase afforded to the title via Game Pass, there seems to be plenty of good feedback coming in that will aid the road map moving forward. Supposedly, some sort of cross-play is on the way, as well as new characters and additions to the War Effort, a kind of ongoing meta-game that all players contribute to and change as they engage. Which, I’ll be honest, is rather forgivable, given the apparent small size of the development team. So is this Game Preview perfect? Absolutely not, and why should it be? The dev team is constantly tweaking the core experience while adding new content by way of Pre-Seasons, even if it is at a snail’s pace. If you’re lucky enough to get two in the same area, maybe a nest, along with droves of lesser scaled monsters, then you’re in for a party. The first time you see a t-rex in action is akin to that moment in the first Tomb Raider when Lara stumbles upon a similar, but much lower polygon, beast. That said, the game looks stunning on the superior Series X hardware, especially some of the bigger dinosaurs. Luckily, leveling and items aren’t lost after crashes, and you can often rejoin the same session you’ve dropped from. The bombs hit the ground, and as we all flew straight into the air, the whole game crashed. Also, I can remember once specific time when I was surrounded by tons of enemies and I called in an airstrike at what was presumably just the wrong time. This includes stuff like getting stuck in walls and dinosaurs sliding around on the ground or becoming wedged into map geometry. However, I’ve heard that if you’re playing on lesser hardware, like an Xbox One X or, god forbid, the original Xbox One, there can be some pretty epic slowdown.Įven so, on the Xbox Series X, I’ve experienced a bevy of strange glitches, and many outright crashes to the Xbox home screen, which the game warns about upon boot-up. But I’ll grant credit where credit is due.įor example, I’ve been playing Second Extinction on an Xbox Series X, and even with dozens and dozens of angry dinos on-screen, there’s never been a single graphical hiccup. Which means not everything is, well, peachy. Now, as fun as this Game Preview is, it’s just that: A Game Preview. There are times when seemingly hundreds of dinosaurs are biting and clawing, explosions are going off and you’re desperately trying to balance healing yourself, outrunning an enflamed gas tanker, and bringing down the hellfire so that you can put an end to what feel like waves of The Tomorrow War’s Whitespikes. The beauty of Second Extinction lies within its chaos. and, if the game is too hard for you, you can always switch to Rosy and have no issues because you're completely immune to attrition.Second Extinction Credit: Systemic Reaction Sure, in solo you'll have to use some slower tactics, but sometimes it's fun to take your time and approach things differently than you would in a group. I kind of wish more games would do this, or at least allow me to set the scaling to higher player counts. It's not like this game is hugely difficult, anyway. Man ska inte straffas för att man vill spela ensam The point is that the game is being made with co-op in mind, but you're not forced to go out with a full team you can play solo if you want, just don't expect it to scale down for you if you're doing that.Īnd, honestly, it feels fine. It is mindboggling how you seem to not be able to see this. You could make a huge difference by just doing a few tweaks for solo players. This just punishes people who want to play solo. What if you just want to chill and play on your own? What if, through no fault of your own, you have to play solo because there are not people to matchmake with?
